Improvisation, instinct and impulse beyond word and thought and the inspiration of our wondrous earth – this is the place where most of my work comes from. Staying in the present moment dictates long periods of silent painting from which form, texture, color and line emerge. This spontaneous expression of energy is like jazz but without sound.
Since my teen years I have studied and worked representationally—primarily drawing and painting landscapes, flowers and life-size figurative work. Over the past several years my work has changed into a more visceral and tactile interpretation of nature. The images come to me through the painting process, memories and observation. Often I paint in blind contours with two hands. I apply paint with sticks, my fingers, kitchen utensils and brushes. For me this creates an immersion with paint and a renewed relationship with nature, color and texture.
I taught drawing, painting and fashion design at North Rockland High School for 24 years. I received a B.S. in Art Education from Buffalo State College and a Masters in Studio Art from the College of New Rochelle.
